The best review you can give this book is addressed to me about 6 websites that I had not heard that gives me a lot of information useful in researching my family tree. Unlike many Dummies books, this is not full of fillers, each page contains useful, discussing the various Internet resources and tips for organizing your search. The book also contains long sections on African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics and genealogical Web sites, and is apparently more about these sites of many other books. reasons

rate the book five stars are of two types: there are links as well as the living dead, and the book was published before the LDS database (supported by the Mormon Church) has been available online . This suggests that this book is ripe for a third edition.

  2. Genealogy Online for Dummies is a practical how-to, where-a,-what-a, and because the book. L. Matthew Helm, one of the authors, is executive vice president and chief technology officer FamilyToolbox. Net, Inc. With a degree in history and a master’s degree in library and information science, has created and maintains the various genealogy websites Helm. April Leigh Helm, the other author, is president of the company. He holds a degree in journalism and management of higher education. Are not dummies, and anyone reading this nonfiction book on genealogy.

The book has 16 chapters organized into five main sections, including three appendices, index, directory, genealogy on the Internet, and a tear-out “package.” The text covers in part by the bases in the second part focusing the research effort in line in the third part of a growing line of research, and a quarter of computer and Internet use for organizing and sharing information. In summary, the five databases lists ten in the hand, ten things to remember when designing your website pedigree, ten sites that offer help and advice to ten “booming”

. Throughout the text are the addresses of useful sites, research councils, the definitions of genealogical terms, step by step instructions and warnings. Examples of alerts “do not violate copyright laws by sending large quantities of books written by e-mail” (p. 215), and not to publish on its website any information that might lead to the isolation of cells his family – near or far “(p. 246). The text offers sidebar discussions of issues such as copyright (p. 250) and privacy (p. 248) and also a lesson in privacy mandate” (234) . But the tone and the message is generally positive: it can do genealogy. The text explains not only the software, search engines, online resources (websites), but also the appropriate hardware for different tasks, and the basics of HyperText Markup Language (HTML) necessary to create a website. MedlinePlus The annex contains the basics of going online, for those not already connected to the Internet. A second appendix defines the terms pedigree. The third appendix provides a long list of software available on the CD inserted into the back of the book, especially software demo for Windows, but the CD contains only the demo software for the meeting in August, and a useful list of related Genealogy URL. The index is detailed. At the heart of the book is a list of 30 genealogy sites, organized into clear categories and annotated in full. The cheat sheet provides instructions for using the Helm Genealogy Toolbox at www. genealogytoolbox. com /, and addresses of 14 web sites.

The final chapter of “ten tips for pedigree from strength to strength” to bring the reader back to the big picture: (1) start with what we know, (2) to organize, (3) always be tested (4 ) always cite your sources, (5) Focus, Focus, Focus, (6) share information (7), add a company or research group (8), attending a conference or workshop (9), attend a meeting family, and (10) does not give up. Before the reader is here, the text has provided clear and detailed guidelines for research in depth, organization and presentation of genealogical information.

The organization and layout of this book of 332 pages, which are very good. I found it easy to locate specific information, I found the information clear enough for beginners but substantial enough for the advanced genealogist. The graphs clearly illustrate the text and the text is easy to read. The fifth wave occasional vignettes are appropriate and funny. I add this book to my collection of reference books that I want easy Desktop access.

Pros: It covers many topics and is a valuable source for beginners with the synthesis of large and well-written of many skills and sources needed to make family history MedlinePlus Cons: No real cons

. Was a little surprised, however, for more information on the patent database incredible land of the former Land Office offered through the Bureau of Land Management National Office East of the country. No mention that people really can download copies of the patent office site to land ancestors, having discovered how and where federal lands have been received. However, this only indicates that a book, although great, can not cover everything.

I was interested to read this book because I do a lot of genealogical research and wanted to see what he could learn more. I was not disappointed. There is much to be discovered through information provided by this book very well. Although one of the “For Dummies” series beginners, there’s plenty here for people who are not fictitious, but are advanced in family studies. The authors own website, “Helm’s Genealogy Toolbox” on www. geneaologytoobox. com, which is described as well as other websites and links. MedlinePlus The book also contains a CD with three themes: 1) a trial version of “Family Tree Maker, a genealogy database of popular, 2) an evaluation copy of” HomeSite 5. 5 “, an editor HTML People and 3) a gazetteer designed for genealogists, “World Place Finder. This CD is running on a software system for Mac OS 7. 55 or later, which is useful if you have not yet risen to OS X. MedlinePlus This book is really a great resource for all genealogists, which includes not only what can be found on the web (an incredible amount), but also basic advice on “how” skills. There is also information in one of three appendices to beginners without real knowledge of many, as we create a service provider. The appendices include other terms and additional information on the CD. MedlinePlus regard to its organization, the book begins with the steps required before registration of easily accessible information required on the ground “that would later discover. Gradually learn to keep notes and photos, organize your files, and many other valuable suggestions to get started. The following chapters (a total of 16 in the book) continue with the planning of travel and genealogical research strategies, as well as many of the almost innumerable sources of information that have been developed to help enthusiasts family history website. This includes information on some foreign sources and archives. MedlinePlus The book also includes the increasing availability of data from different sources, including census and vital statistics published on the web, plus the total value using indexes of names genealogy forum, and national coordination incredible project GenWeb county and state records. And this is just an example of what this book covers useful! The index helps you easily find various tools on specific topics, this great “and” book. MedlinePlus is generally easy to follow style, like other “For Dummies” books, make this a real winner for both the beginner and advanced genealogist. And “well worth the price.

This book is for the novice genealogist. It tells us how to plan their research and what kind of computer equipment needed. It guides you step by step on certain websites. It’s boring, even for a book of genealogy. I was hoping for more information on what is contained in the individual sites, where to find certain types of documents and software available for the genealogist of simple explanations. It ’s great if you have no idea, but if you can surf the Internet on your own, you do not need this book. I use it occasionally, but the source and sources of genealogy: a guide to the genealogy of America are much deeper.

  5. This is a very useful book. I have done genealogical research for many years, and found all the advice you give to someone who has just started its investigation on the pages. I also found things I had not thought he could use and I have plenty. This is a perfect manual for those interested in using the Internet to promote their research.
